Hi Karen, I workd for Bartondale for 18 years at Hirwaun from 1987 and one year prior to that in 1978 when I started my apprenticeship. I left in 2005 as the MD to emigrate to Australia and I am certainly not aware of any death at the premises or ever when hats were worn. The only connection that could be made with the name and hats is the Welder Jim, from Rhigos, who was there when I started my apprenticeship, not sure what happened to him, certainly was not there in 1988. In 2002 Bartonadle bought out Durmech Eng., who were based in Dudley, the West Midlands and a lot of equipment was transfered down to Hirwaun and I do know that in the late 80,s they had a operate die during a nightshift but do not know the full story. Maybe worth investigating. Along with others I worked many nightshift and usually only two of us at a time and never had any experiences, maybe mores the shame by the sounds of it!

H Phil, thanks so much for your input, it`s great to hear from you. It is a shame you didn`t experience anything, it would have been great to have backup from someone who worked there. Several of us had the same or very similar experience there individually and in groups, an amazing place it`s just a shame we had to conduct such a hurried investigation and can`t return! You would be welcome to come along to any of our future events, thanks again.
